JEREMIAS WOLFF (1663-1724)

The Virgin and Child with Pinks [‘Madonna dei Garofani’]

c.1683-1714

Engraving with etching | 43.1 x 33.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850743

An engraving reproducing the composition of Raphael's so-called Madonna dei Garofani (or Madonna of the Pinks), a painting currently in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 6596). Not listed in Ruland (1876).

It has been suggested that this engraving may be based upon a print of the same subject (although in reverse) by Jean Boulanger, an impression of which can be found at RCIN 850642. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.

Showing the seated Virgin holding the Christ Child seating on a cushion on her lap and captivating his attention with some pinks; in an interior with a view on a landscape.
