AFTER RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

The Virgin and Child with an Angel

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 36.4 x 31.5 cm (mount) | RCIN 851217

A photograph of a drawing by Raphael (c.1507) currently in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1895,0915.637). In his Raphael Collection catalogue (1876), Ruland listed the drawing as being then in the hands of Mr Gundy, who bought it at Dr Wellesley's sale. According to an undated annotation on the mount, the drawing was once in the collections of 'Viti, Mqs Lagoy and Mariette', whose collectors' marks are visible on the photographed drawing.

The photograph shows the blessing Christ Child, being supported by an angel on His mother's lap, who looks at Him with hands clasped in adoration; set against a landscape background.
