The Virgin and Child [‘The Mackintosh Madonna’]

dated 1827

Etching and engraving | 32.5 x 24.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850851

A print reproducing (in reverse) the so-called Mackintosh Madonna, a painting by Raphael (c.1509-11) now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 2069). The legend below the image indicates that the painting was still in the collection of the Duc d’Orléans when this print was made. In Ruland's Raphael Collection catalogue (1876), Ruland listed the painting as being in the possession of Mr R.J. Mackintosh.

Showing the half-length seated figure of the Virgin supporting the Christ Child with both hands, who stands on a parapet while putting His arms around His mother’s neck and looking to the right; in a landscape.
