Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER A WORK PREVIOUSLY ATTRIBUTED TO RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

The Virgin and Child

c.1853-76

Salted paper print | 14.5 x 10.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851263

A photograph of a drawing the attribution of which is still disputed. It was formerly attributed to Raphael and listed by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Mr E. Harzen, Hamburg. The drawing is now in the Kunsthalle, Hambourg (inv. no.21417). An almost identical drawing is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.6794); a third similar drawing was listed by Ruland as being then in the Uffizi, Florence (see RCIN 851264). The composition resembles closely the group of the Virgin and Child in the Glory of St Vitalis, painted by Vittore Carpaccio (1514) and currently in the church of St Vitalis, Venice. It has been suggested that these drawings may be copies after a lost study by Raphael subsequently used by Carpaccio for his painting (Cordellier/Py 1992, no.29).

The photograph shows the half-length Virgin grasping the Child's right leg, who sits on a cushion and reaches for the object held in His mother's right hand.
