Holy Families & Madonna and Child

The Virgin and Child

c.1800-1876

RCIN 850946

This facsimile reproduces a print which is attributed on plate to Raphael and was catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the 'collection at Madrid'. Published in ‘El Arte en España’ (blind stamp, upper centre).

The composition closely resembles (although in reverse) an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi described as after a drawing by Raphael related to his paintings of the ‘Madonna di Foligno’ and ‘Madonna Sistina’. An impression of Marcantonio's engraving can be found at RCIN 850942.

Showing the Virgin sitting on clouds, supporting the standing Child who looks down, with angels amongst the clouds.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
