The Virgin and Child
dated 1833Engraving | RCIN 850940
An engraving after a painting which, according to the lettering on the print, was then attributed to Sassoferrato and housed in the collection of Count G. Mellerio, Milan. With the blind stamp of the print dealer Heinrich Füssli's at lower right (not in Lugt), and another unidentified blind stamp in the lower left corner. Lettered with production details.
The composition seems to be derived from an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (RCIN 850934: probably after a lost drawing by Raphael, related to his painting of the ‘Madonna di Foligno’ (c.1512) now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, Vatican City). For a photograph of the ‘Madonna di Foligno’, see RCIN 850930.
Showing the Virgin sitting on clouds, with her hand resting on the right thigh of the Child, who looks down while grasping her mantle with both hands.
