Holy Families & Madonna and Child

PIETRO WAINCHER (ACTIVE C. 1835)

The Christ Child adored by the Virgin and the Infant Baptist, with an Angel

published 1835

Etching | 17.9 x 11.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851180

An outline-etching after a painting erroneously attributed on plate to Raphael then in the Oratorio dei P.P. Filippini, Palermo (church of Sant'Ignazio all'Olivella). The painting - previously ascribed to Lorenzo di Credi - is now generally believed to be by Antonio Sogliani and is housed in the Galleria Regionale della Sicilia, Palazzo Abatellis, Palermo. Lettered with production details. Published in A. Gallo, 'Sopra un quadro di Raffaello Sanzio posseduto dai PP Filippini dell'Oratorio in Palermo', in 'L'Indagatore siciliano', I, vol.II, 1, 1835, pp.27-43. The print shows the full-length kneeling Virgin with clasped hands, adoring the Christ Child who lies on the ground, with the Infant Baptist with his hands crossed over his chest worshipping the Child while supported by a angel at left; in a landscape.
