Holy Families & Madonna and Child

Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

Study for the Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist and St Elizabeth

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 26.5 x 23.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850766

A photograph of a drawing currently attributed to the so-called ‘Calligraphic Forger’ now in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.17576).

Ruland (1876) described the drawing as a study by Raphael for his so-called ‘Canigiani Holy Family’ (c.1507-08; see RCIN 850756 for a photograph of the painting). It is now generally thought that the drawing is based on a sheet in the Musée Chantilly (see RCIN 850769 for a photograph of it), lacking the figure of St Joseph. See Bibliographic References.
