Holy Families & Madonna and Child

AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (1483-1520)

Study for a Christ Child

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 13.7 x 11.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850747

A photograph of a silver point study executed by a 16th century Florentine artist now in the Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.1327F).

The drawing has been connected with Raphael's so-called Madonna dei Garofani (or Madonna of the Pinks), a painting now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 6596). Compared to the painting, the figure of the Christ Child is here shown in reverse. See RCIN 850738 for a print reproducing the painting.

Showing the Christ Child sitting on a cushion on His mother’s lap, turned to the right and looking up at her; with his hands apparently in the act of grasping something held by His mother.
