Holy Families & Madonna and Child

ARCHIBALD MACDUFF (C. 1750-?)

Holy Family with the Young John the Baptist under an Oak Tree

c.1770-1800

Aquating with etching, printed in brown | 37.0 x 27.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851000

A reversed aquatint-etching after a painting catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the possession of Dr Richard Mead. Lettered with title and production details. The painting is a copy of the so-called ‘Madonna della Quercia’, a painting attributed to Raphael and his workshop (c.1518-19) now in the Museo del Prado, Madrid (inv. no.303) generally reputed to be after a design by the master.

Showing the full length Virgin seating under an oak tree, holding the Christ Child on her right knee, who reaches for the scroll held by the young St John the Baptist who stands at right, with St Joseph resting on a sculpted fragment at left and looking on; in a landscape.
