Christ bearing the Cross
1860Albumen print | 21.6 x 10.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 850679
A photograph of a small painting formerly attributed to Raphael which Ruland (1876) catalogued as being then in the collection of the Duke of Sutherland. According to Ruland (1876), the photographed painting is similar in treatment to the figure of Christ bearing the cross painted in Raphael’s Procession to Calvary (c.1504-05; see RCIN 859675 for a print reproducing the panels), one of the three panels forming the predella of the so-called Colonna Altarpiece. Raphael's predella scene is now in the National Gallery, London (inv. no.NG 2919). The central panel of the altarpiece is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no.32.130.1; see RCIN 850667 for a photograph of the painting).
Showing the full length figure of Christ turned to the right carrying his cross.
Details of the photography of the Duke of Sutherland's picture for the Prince Consort are in the Raphael Collection correspondence (RA VIC/ADDA10/85/112; RA VIC/ADDA10/85/113 and RA VIC/ADDA10/85/135).
