MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

The Victory of Scipio over Syphax

c.1500-1580

Engraving | 19.3 x 24.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852253

This engraving appears to be a late state (or an anonymous copy in the same direction) of a print by the Master of the Die (Bartsch XV, p.225, no.73). Not described in Bartsch.

This state (or copy) bears a lettered inscription ascribing the composition to Raphael. It is now generally thought that the composition derives from a design by his school, inspired by the Antique. Lettered with line in Italian along the bottom, and signed with monogram of the Master of the Die (a die with the letter B, lower right). Trimmed along all edges. The address of publisher Thomassin (originally below attribution to Raphael at lower right) has been cut out.
