The Morbetto
c.1778-1823Etching | RCIN 852193
This print is from a plate etched by Morghen with the deliberate intention to leave it unfinished. Signed with printmaker's monogram at lower centre.
This print reproduces (in reverse) the so-called 'Morbetto', a composition better known through an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi after Raphael's invention (a second state impression can be found at RCIN 852188). It has been suggested (Bernini Pezzini, in Raphael Invenit 1985) that Morghen's plate may be based upon a drawing now in the Uffizi (inv. 525 E; a photograph at RCIN 842191) commonly regarded as the modello for Marcantonio's engraving rather than upon the print itself. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
