FRANCESCO FARAONE AQUILA (ACTIVE 1690-1740)

The Morbetto

c.1700-1720

Etching | 22.9 x 25.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852192

According to the inscription below image, this print reproduces a drawing by Raphael then in the collection of Pope Clement XI, to whose nephew the plate is dedicated. Lettered with dedication, and Clement XI's coat of arms.

A drawing in the Uffizi (inv. no.525E; a photograph at RCIN 842191) which closely resembles the composition reproduced in this print is now generally considered as the original modello for Marcantonio Raimondi's engraving of this subject (see RCIN 852191). It has been suggested that the Uffizi drawing may be identified with the sheet formerly in the collection of Clement XI (Forlani Tempesti 1983). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
