AGOSTINO DEI MUSI (C. 1490-AFTER 1536)

The Emperor Freeing the Slave Androcles

c.1515-20

Engraving | 40.5 x 26.8 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852219

An engraving after a design traditionally reputed to be by Raphael. Signed with Agostino's initials on stone at lower left, and (Marcantonio's) empty tablet at lower right. It has been suggested that a drawing in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv. no.80.3.190), in the same direction as the engraving, may be the original design upon with the plate of 'The Emperor Freeing the Slave Androcles' was based. Once ascribed to Peruzzi and G.F. Penni, the drawing has been recently attributed to the School of Marcantonio (Shoemaker in Shoemaker/Broun 1981) and, more hesitantly, to Agostino Veneziano (Gnann in Oberhuber/Gnann 1999). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
