AFTER A WORK COPYING GIULIO ROMANO (ROME C. 1499-MANTUA 1546)

The Clemency of Scipio

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 34.6 x 47.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852210

A photograph of a drawing catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being then in the collection of Édouard Gatteaux in Paris. According to Roseline Bacou (in 'Jules Romain. L'Histoire de Scipion', 1978), the drawing was destroyed in 1871 together with two other sheets belonging to the same collection.

Other drawings of this subject survive in the Louvre (inv. no.3722), in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 991359) and in the Albertina in Vienna (inv. no.142000). A further drawing was mentioned by Ruland as being then in the collection of the late Baron de Triqueti in Paris (a photograph at RCIN 852212).

The subject is related to the set of tapestries illustrating the history of Scipio Africanus commissioned by Francis I from Giulio Romano between 1531 and 1535, who is held responsible for the invention of the composition. The Louvre drawing has been described as the design ('petit patron') for the tapestry. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
