AFTER PERINO DEL VAGA (FLORENCE 1501-ROME 1547)

The Battle of the Amazons

c.1860-76

Carbon print | 25.6 x 18.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852273

A photograph of a drawing by Perino del Vaga currently in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.594).

The drawing is a study for one of the six intaglios engraved in rock crystal by Giovanni Bernardi for the 'Cassetta Farnese', an embossed silver-gilt setting made by Manno Sbarri in c.1548-61 now in the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte, Naples. Other studies by Perino connected with the 'Cassetta Farnese' are in the British Museum, London (inv. nos.Ff.1-62, 1946-7-13-565) and in the Louvre (inv. no.593).

The composition was engraved, in reverse, by Enea Vico (Bartsch XV, p.287, no.14). See RCIN 852272.
