ATTRIBUTED TO MARCO DENTE DA RAVENNA (D. 1527)

Scipio's Victory over the Carthaginians

published 1540

Engraving | 41.2 x 55.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852255

An engraving formerly attributed to an anonymous artist of the school of Marcantonio Raimondi, described by Bartsch as in the manner of Agostino Veneziano after a design by Raphael. It is now generally ascribed to Marco Dente on the ground of the monogram at lower centre (see Nagler, IV, no.3468) that is likely to refer to the engraver and not to Raphael as inventor of the composition (as previously errouneously interpreted). Lettered with line in Latin, Salamanca's address and publishing date. Second state. The subject is related to the set of tapestries illustrating the history of Scipio Africanus commissioned by Francis I from Giulio Romano between 1531 and 1535, who is held responsible for the invention of the composition. Drawing of this subject survive in the Louvre (inv. no.3721), in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris (BB.14a, fol.36 bis) and in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. SR 406). A further drawing, destroyed in 1871 when in the Gatteaux Collection in Paris, has been described as the original by Giulio Romano, which served as modello for the engraving (Massari 1993). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
