MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)

Naval Battle

c.1530-1560

Engraving | 24.2 x 40.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852274

An engraving based upon a design which Bartsch ascribed to Giulio Romano. Popham (1935) suggested that the composition may be after Polidoro da Caravaggio. Signed with engraver's monogram (a die with the letter B, lower right). Second state with Lafréry's address at lower right below image (not described in Bartsch). Stamped with the collector's mark of Robert Balmanno (Lugt 2193).

A drawing of this composition (in the same direction) is in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1960,1115.5), where it is currently catalogued as a copy after Polidoro.
