Alexander the Great and Timoclea (?)

after 1860

Carbon print | RCIN 852198

A photograph of a drawing currently in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. Pl 367). Not in Ruland (1876). Annotated in pencil on the back.

Another drawing of this subject is in the Bowdoin College Museum of Art, Brunswick (inv. no.1956.25.209; ex Poynter Collection), and both sheets are reputed copies after a lost original by Raphael, which has been sometimes identified with a study in the Städelsches Kunstinstitut, Frankfurt (inv. no.383). Photographs of these drawings can be found at RCINs 852196, 852197.

The subject, which has been often interpreted as Timoclea brought before Alexander the Great, is an ongoing matter of debate. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
  • Acquired for the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (after 1876)
