AFTER A WORK ATTRIBUTED TO JACOPO RIPANDA (FL. 1500-16)
A Roman Scene with Crowds of People near the Colosseum
c.1853-76Albumen print | 28.7 x 20.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852225
A photograph of a drawing of a scene from Roman history in the British Museum (inv.no.1933.1113.1), where it is attributed to Jacopo Ripanda.
Ruland (1876) thought this drawing was "apparently by an old Venetian master", and catalogued as being then in the possession of Herr Heubel at Berlin. According to an anonymous note in the master copy of Ruland's Raphael Collection catalogue housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle, Wickhoff suggested that the drawing may be by Baldassare Peruzzi; this attribution was accepted by many scholars, including Pouncey and Gere (see Bibliographic References).
