JOHANN GOTTLIEB PRESTEL (1739-1808)

A Fight Scene

published 1779

Etching | 61.1 x 46.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852250

A facsimile etching of a drawing currently in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. no.226), formerly attributed to Raphael, but no longer thought to be by him. Published in J.G. Prestel, 'Dessins des meilleurs peintres des Pais-Bas d'Allemagne et d'Italie du Cabinet de Monsieur G.T. Schmidt', Vienna 1779, plate 20. Another impression can be found at RCIN 852249. Ruland connected the drawing with a sheet now in the Musée des Beaux-Arts, Lille (inv. Pl 430), a photograph of which can be found at RCIN 852247. This impression - which was not listed in Ruland (1876) - bears an engraved inscription pasted on the back, ascribing the drawing to Raphael and describing it as a study for the painting of 'La Descente des Sarrasins au Port d'Ostie'. According to the inscription, the drawing was then in the collection of the Prince Charles de Ligne at Bruxelles.
