CHARLES LOUIS LINGÉE (1748-1819)

A man under a tree

published 1803

Etching | 9.5 x 15.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 852313

An outline etching possibly after a drawing by Raphael and very similar to an etching catalogued by Ruland (1876) as being executed in Giovanni Battista Franco's manner and imitated from a figure in the cartoon "des Grimpeurs" by Michelangelo. This print is lettered with the title in French, German and English. Signed by the printmaker with production details. This print was published as plate 403 in C.P. Landon, 'Vie et Œuvre complète de Raphaël Sanzio', 1803. Trimmed within the platemark. Annotated on the verso.

The cartoon is the so-called Cartoon of Pisa, the Battle of Cascina: the figure depicted in this etching is related to the figure on the far right in the cartoon (in reverse).
