CARLO PONTANI (ACTIVE 19TH CENTURY)

The façade of Raphael's House

published 1845

Etching | 29.6 x 39.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854134

An etching by Carlo Pontani after a print by Lafreri which represents the architectural measured elevation of the façade of Palazzo Caprini, a building, now destroyed, erected to Bramante's project between 1501 and 1510 for the apostolic protonotary Adriano Caprini. This print was published by Pontani in "Opere architettoniche di Raffaello Sanzio, incise e dichiarate dall'Architetto Carlo Pontani", published in two volumes in 1841 and 1845. The print is lettered with the title in Italian and two scales. Signed by the printmaker. Annotated on the verso.

This building was also known as "Palazzo di Raffaello", as in 1517 it was acquired by Raphael, who spent the rest of his life there. The Palazzo was in the Borgo rione (district) in Rome and since the end of the 16th century it became the main core of Palazzo dei Convertendi, which was demolished in 1938 for the opening of Via della Conciliazione.
