Palazzo Bartolini Salimbeni
published 1845Etching | 38.0 x 28.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 854184
An etching by Carlo Pontani depicting the facade of Bartolini Salimbeni Palace, in Piazza S. Trinitá, Florence. This print was published by Pontani in "Opere architettoniche di Raffaello Sanzio, incise e dichiarate dall'Architetto Carlo Pontani", published in two volumes in 1841 and 1845. The print is lettered with the title in Italian and a scale. Signed by the printmaker. Annotated on the verso.
The Palace was built by Baccio d'Agnolo between 1520 and 1523 for Giovanni Bartolini. In this project, the architectural designs executed by Raphael seem to have been used as a model. Baccio designed an original façade that introduced in Florence innovative motifs already used by Raphael in Rome, such as an architraved portal, tympanum windows, niches designed to house statues, cornices decorated with the family insignia and a strong overhanging cornice.
