MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)

The Seven Virtues

c.1510-25

Engraving | RCIN 851946

A series of seven engravings by Marcantonio Raimondi depicting the Seven Virtues (three theological virtues: Faith, Hope, and Love or Charity; four cardinal virtues: Prudence, Justice, Temperance, and Fortitude).

The authorship of the designs is a matter of dispute, with some scholars attributing them to Raphael (Bartsch; Passavant), and some to an artist of his school, possibly Giulio Romano (Delaborde). It has also been suggested that the engravings of the Three Theological Virtues and of Prudence may be based upon designs by Giulio Romano, whereas those of Temperance, Justice and Strength upon drawings by Raphael (Bianchi in Raffaello. L'opera, le fonti, la fortuna, 1968, p.263, note 230).
