ATTRIBUTED TO MASTER OF THE DIE (ACTIVE 1530-60)
The Seven Liberal Arts
dated 1544Engraving | RCIN 851978
A series of seven engravings depicting the Seven Liberal Arts (Trivium: Grammar, Logic, Rhetoric; Quadrivium: Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, Astronomy). Numbered, titled and dated on plate.
The authorship of the series is a matter of dispute: Bartsch catalogued it under the Master of the Die, but some modern scholars attribute it to Bonasone (Massari in Raphael Invenit 1985). The author of the original designs is also unclear. Passavant and Ruland (1876) suggested that they may be by Raphael.
