MARCANTONIO RAIMONDI (C. 1480-1534)
The Dream of Raphael
c.1505-10Engraving | 23.6 x 33.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851981
An engraving commonly known as 'The Dream' or 'The Dream of Raphael'. With engraver's monogram.
The subject of this print is a matter of dispute, and the author of the design is also unclear. It has long been associated with Raphael, and Ruland (1876) catalogued it as after a drawing attributed to the master. According to Shoemaker (in Shoemaker/Broun 1981), the engraving may be based upon a lost work by Giorgione, whereas Campbell (2010) suggested that the composition may have been designed by Marcantonio himself. For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
