AFTER A WORK COPYING RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Calumny of Apelles

c.1853-76

Albumen print | 13.8 x 19.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851958

A photograph of a drawing now in the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no.14745F). A drawing of the same subject currently attributed to the circle of Raphael survives in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3876), photographs of which can be found at RCINs 851951, 851952. A third drawing of this composition is in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1872,1012.3268). Suggestions have been made that the Uffizi drawing might be the one formerly in the Crozat Collection, reproduced in a print by Cochin and Le Sueur published in 'Recueil Crozat’, Paris 1729, plate 39, an impression of which can be found at RCIN 851953.
