The Calumny of Apelles

before 1796

Etching | RCIN 851957

A print after a drawing now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3876) when in the collection of the Duke of Modena (Este Collection). Lettered with traditional attribution to Raphael and text in Italian below image explaining the subject matter. The drawing - currently attributed to the circle of Raphael - entered the Louvre collection in 1796, hence the 'terminus ante quem' for dating the print.
  • Added to the Prince Consort's Raphael Collection (c.1853-76)
