AFTER A WORK BY THE WORKSHOP OF RAPHAEL (URBINO 1483-ROME 1520)

The Calumny of Apelles

before 1796

Etching | 24.3 x 29.6 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851956

An anonymous print after a drawing when in the collection of the Duke of Modena (Este Collection); reproduced in reverse. Lettered with traditional attribution to Raphael and text in French below image explaining the subject matter. The drawing - now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3876) where it is currently attributed to the circle of Raphael - entered the Louvre collection in 1796, hence the 'terminus ante quem' for dating the print.

It has been suggested that this ecthing may be a copy in reverse of a print by Francesco Novelli, an impression of which can be found at RCIN 851955 (Massing 1990, no.12.B.d). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
