CHARLES NICOLAS COCHIN (1688-1754)

The Calumny of Apelles

published 1729

Woodcut with etching | 19.0 x 36.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851953

A print after a drawing attributed on plate to Raphael when in the collection of Pierre Crozat. Lettered with title and production details. Published in ‘Recueil Crozat’, Paris 1729, plate 39. A drawing of the same subject now in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (inv. no.3876) - where it is currently attributed to the workshop of Raphael - has been often identified with the one reproduced in this print. Cordellier/Py (1992, p.338) have pointed out that the two drawings are actually different works, although of the same subject. Suggestions have been made that a drawing in the Uffizi (inv. no.14745 F) might be the one formerly in the Crozat Collection reproduced in this print (Monbeig Goguel 1983, under no.119). A third drawing of this composition is in the British Museum, London (inv. no.1872,1012.3268). For further discussion, see Bibliographic References.
