Hope

published 1 June 1809

Etching, printed in brown, with aquatint | 40.6 x 28.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 851943

A facsimile of a drawing currently housed in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle (RCIN 990415). Lettered with production details and attribution of the drawing to Raphael. Included in 'Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools ... in His Majesty's collection', London 1812, plate LII. A photograph of the drawing at RCIN 851942.

Passavant thought that the photographed drawing may be a copy of a study formerly in the collection of Professor Jansen at Copenhagen which he attributed to G.F. Penni and described as preparatory for a painting then in the possession of H. Hope, a photograph of which can be found at RCIN 851940.
