FRANCESCO COLONNA (1432-1527)

Discours du Songe de Poliphile [Hypnerotomachia Poliphili]

published 1554

Woodcuts | RCIN 851995

A set of woodcut illustrations from the 1554 French edition of the ‘Hypnerotomachia Poliphili’. The ‘Hypnerotomachia Poliphili’, also known as ‘Poliphilo's Strife of Love in a Dream’, is a novel said to be by Francesco Colonna. It was first published in Venice by Aldus Manutius in 1499, and featured splendid woodcut illustrations. The first French edition (‘Discours du Songe de Poliphile’) was printed in 1546 by Jacques Kerver with a (free) translation by Jean Martin. It was reprinted in folio in 1554 and 1561, and in quarto in 1600. The woodcut illustrations featured in the Italian second edition (published in Venice in 1545) were thought to have been designed by Raphael. This view was discarded by Tauriscus (1819).
