Photograph of a wounded Zouave soldier with a Vivandière. The Zouave lies on the ground with another soldier supporting his head. The Vivandière kneels to the left, holding a bottle and offering him a drink in a small glass. A long gun lies on the ground beside him and a row of tents can be seen in the distance. Zouave regiments from Algeria served with the French army during the Crimean War. Vivandières, also known as a Cantinières, were women who travelled with the French army as canteen workers.
