JABEZ HUGHES (1819-84)

Wounded Crimean War Veterans at Chatham Military Hospital

1883 copy after 1855 original

Carbon print | 14.9 x 20.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2500167

Photograph of a large group of wounded Crimean War veterans gathered on a grass verge at Chatham Military Hospital. There are around one hundred and fifty men, most standing with some sitting on the grass in front of them and a few spaced out on the raised verge behind. They are wearing a range of military uniforms and many are holding crutches. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.

Throughout the war Queen Victoria had taken an active interest in the welfare of the troops and on their return to Britain she met a number of the wounded veterans at Buckingham Palace and at Chatham Military Hospital. Following her visits to the hospital she commissioned a series of photographs of the veterans.
