Photograph of Balaklava looking seawards. In the foreground there is a ruined shed. In the harbour to the right there are a number of ships with tall masts. The ruins of a Genoese fortress can just be made out on the clifftop to the left.
The town of Balaklava was the site of one of the major battles of the Crimean War, and its port and purpose built railway yard were of strategic significance throughout.
