View of Balaklava looking seaward, Russian cottages in the foreground

Mar 1855

Albumen print | 20.8 x 26.6 cm (image) | RCIN 2500460

Photograph of Balaklava looking seawards. In the foreground there are several small Russian cottages with tiled roofs. In the harbour behind there are a large number of ships with tall masts. The ruins of a Genoese fortress can be seen on the clifftop to the left. The town of Balaklava was the site of one of the major battles of the Crimean War, and its port and purpose built railway yard were of strategic significance throughout.
