Street in Sevastopol

Photograph of a street in Sevastopol after the fall of the city. Derelict and dilapidated buildings line both sides of the street, many with piles of rubble in front of them. A soldier stands guard by a sentry box to the right, with a number of other soldiers standing nearby. After an eleven month siege the city of Sevastopol was captured by the allied British, French and Turkish forces on the 8th September 1855. The city was badly damaged during the siege, and many of the grandest buildings lay in ruins.
