Sevastopol from the Malakoff No. 1

Photograph of Sevastopol taken from the Malakoff redoubt. On the hillside in the foreground there are a number of ruined stone buildings with piles of rubble surrounding them. Behind are the buildings of Sevastopol with the Russian military barracks at the forefront. In the distance is the sea, with ships just visible. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
