1883 copy after 1856 original

Carbon print | 22.3 x 17.5 cm (image) | RCIN 2500187

Photograph of Sergeant William Russell standing in front of a gun carriage at Woolwich military barracks. He is wearing military uniform with the Crimean medal and has a rucksack on his back. There is a rifle with a flag attached in his left hand and his right arm is resting on the gun itself. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph.

Sergeant William Russell served with the 5th Battalion of the Royal Artillery during the Crimean War. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited Woolwich to welcome the Royal Artillery home from the Crimea and after their visit commissioned a series of portraits of the men from the photographers Joseph Cundall and Robert Howlett.
