Officers of the 89th Regiment at Cathcart's Hill

1855

Albumen print | 15.0 x 20.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2500456

Photograph of Captain Skynner, Lieutenant Knatchbull, Captain Conyers, Lieutenant Longfield and Captain Hawley, all officers of the 89th Regiment, at Cathcart's Hill. Two lean on a boulder at the centre of the group and another stands to the left. The other two soldiers recline on rocky ground to the right, one holding a telescope. They are all wearing military uniform and winter coats. There are small groups of tents spaced out in the valley behind them. Cathcart's Hill, named after the nearby grave of General Cathcart, was used as an observation point during the Crimean War. From it commanders could view the progress of the Siege of Sevastopol.
