JAMES ROBERTSON (1813-88)

Malakoff from the Mamelon

1855

Salted paper print | 22.7 x 29.3 cm (image) (image) | RCIN 2500691

Photograph of the Malakoff redoubt, taken from the Mamelon. A small wooden hut and flagpole in the Malakoff can be seen on the small hill in the distance. In the foreground there are rows of trenches, the sides reinforced by wicker fences and sandbags. Canons are visible in the trench closest to the camera. The French, led by Maréchal Pélissier, captured the Malakoff redoubt on the 8th September 1855. It had been one of the key Russian defences during the Siege of Sevastopol and its fall effectively ended the siege. The Russians abandoned the city that evening.
