JABEZ HUGHES (1819-84)

Major-General Sir Henry Bentinck (1796-1878)

1883 copy after 1854-6 original

Carbon print | 17.4 x 12.9 cm (image) | RCIN 2500022

Photograph of Sir Henry John William Bentinck seated at a table facing partly right. He is wearing military uniform and has his right arm in a sling. There is a bicorn hat with a feather plume on the table beside him to the right. This photograph, printed by Jabez Hughes in 1883, is a carbon print pasted over the original photograph. It is likely that the original photograph was hand coloured in the area around the face.

Sir Bentinck commanded the 28th Regiment of Foot during the Crimean War and was shot in the arm at the Battle of Inkerman.
