Photograph of Major Chapman standing next to a horse which is facing right. He is wearing military uniform and is resting his right arm on the saddle and holding a riding crop in his left hand. There are wooden buildings behind him.

There is a pencil caption in a 19th century hand below the photograph on the mount. It reads, 'Major Chapman of the Batteries'. The same photograph in the Library of Congress collection is identified as Colonel Goodlake.
