Photograph of Captain Phillips mounted on a horse facing left with Lieutenant Yates standing by the head of the horse with his left arm resting on the saddle. Both are wearing military uniform and have swords. There is open ground and a hillside behind them.

Captain Phillips served with the 8th Hussars during the Crimean War and Lieutenant Yates with the 11th Hussars. Phillips charged with the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava.
