Lieutenant-Colonel Shadforth is standing third from the right holding a long stick in his right hand. The officer sitting to the far left is pouring a drink for the man sitting beside him. All are wearing military uniforms and winter coats and most are carrying a sword or long stick. The stone hut can be seen behind them and there are rocks on the ground. Lieutenant-Colonel Shadforth served in the Crimean War and died during the Battle of the Great Redan.
