Record of historical events

Victoria and Albert collected photographs that documented the political and military events that defined a period of global expansion

ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Lieut. Genl. His Royal Highness the Duke of Cambridge, KG

1856

Salted paper print | 39.3 x 32.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 604992

Photograph with touches of watercolour of Prince George, Duke of Cambridge as Duke. Three quarter length with short hair, beard, plain tie, and buttoned jacket. Seated, with right hands clasped in lap. With English inscription below, including publisher's address, 'Photographed by R. Fenton Manchester, Published by T. Agnew & Sons, May 12th, 1856, London P & D Colnaghi & Co, Paris, Maulin 23, Rue Richer, New York Williams & Co,.'

The photograph has been touched with watercolour to infill small defects from the negative. Originally these additions would have blended in with the tone of the photograph, however over time the salted paper print has faded causing the touches of watercolour to appear as darker marks on the portrait.

Not in O'Donoghue
