    OSCAR MALLITTE (1829-1905)

    John Andaman

    Dec 1857Jan 1858

    Albumen print | 19.6 x 14.2 cm (image) | RCIN 2935007

Photograph of a man in full length, facing the viewer leaning against a rush matting wall and resting both hands on a long wooden pole. The subject is naked apart from a piece of cloth that is tied around his waist. On the right is a bow and arrow, wicker basket and an open topped cylindrical container, possibly acting as a scabbard for holding arrows.

This portrait of John Andaman, an islander brought back to Calcutta, now Kolkata, with the British team, was the first photograph of a native Andaman Islander. Oscar Mallitte was part of a British survey party to the Andaman Islands (off the east coast of India) which was tasked with establishing a penal colony for Indian convicts. The party, led by Frederic John Mouat, a British surgeon, landed at Port Cornwallis on 11 December 1857.
