Interior of the Redan

Photograph of the interior of the Redan after the fall of Sevastopol. The walls are reinforced with wicker fencing and sandbags and there are two cannons by the gaps in the wall. The floor is littered with cannonballs, wood, rope and other debris. Beyond the redoubt there is a hill to the left.
The British made two unsuccessful attacks on the Redan fortification, a Russian stronghold, during the Siege of Sevastopol. The siege eventually ended on the 8th September 1855 when the French captured the nearby Malakoff redoubt, forcing the Russians to abandon the city.
This photograph was subsequently turned into an engraving and published in England in 1855. See '150th Anniversary of the Crimean War' (Sadberk Hanim Muzesi, Istanbul, 2006), p.21.
